-Earliest Icons of Four Apostles Discovered in Rome?

by Dr. D ~ June 23rd, 2010

Rome, Italy - Catacomb of St. Calixtus
(Catacombs by nd_architecture_library via Flickr)

Early icons of four Apostles have been discovered in catacombs in Rome.

The likenesses of Peter, Paul, John, and Andrew dating from the late 4th century are being touted as the earliest known icons of the Apostles.

But is that really the case? I would expect earlier examples from Asia Minor, the 4th century seems rather late to me. Nevertheless the pictures are rather spectacular:

Just as I thought. Ben Witherington actually names several places in Turkey which could well have earlier icons.
