-Re: James-‘The Brother of Jesus’ Ossuary Trial

by Dr. D ~ November 6th, 2008

Found this update on the trial at Ben Witherinton’s blog.

The trial over the authenticity of the inscription on the ossuary is nearly over.

Opponents to the historicity of the ossuary had held that the first part of the inscription could well be genuine but that the last part, saying ‘brother of Jesus’ was forged.

Yuval Goren, the chief scholar in opposition, was forced under oath to admit in court that the last part of the inscription which he objected to had original ancient patina in the word “Jesus,” the last word in the inscription that reads “James, son of Joseph, brother of Jesus.”

Yuval Goren, former chairman of Tel Aviv University’s institute of archaeology, was the government’s star witness, and really the only substantial opponent to the authenticity of the ossuary.

Rather than proving the ossuary to be a forgery, the trial is actually going a long ways in providing a good test for its possible authenticity.           *Top
